Uppföljning Ukraina-projektet, korrespondens

We are glad that the equipment finally found its destination at the Kyiv hospital and is now serving it’s purpose.

I get from time to time questions from my club colleagues and from other participating districts asking how our supplied equipment has improved the capacity of the hospital in this treatment area.

 

I am not able to give an adequate answer to these questions more than “the equipment has arrived at the hospital and the head of the department is very satisfied with this extra capacity”. It is an uneasy feeling not to be able to give a more precise information to rotarians, who have contributed to the financing of our project with the ambition to give Ukraine an important assistance when saving lives.

 

Now the hospital have had access to “our” bronchoscope, etc. for more than two months and I presume it would be possible to receive some statistics of it’s utilization.

In our request of funding from TRF we have stated that your club will oversee the use of the equipment and on a monthly basis extract statistics of increased capacity, e.g. number of extra patients treated due to our input.

 

You can be sure that TRF will require this information in the coming reports together with a “baseline” giving the corresponding data prior to receiving the new equipment.

If you do not have such information available at the moment, could you organize that somebody in your club visits the hospital in order to collect this data?

You probably know that Elena Malkomian (a niece of your present president, living in Stockholm) contacted me a month ago asking me what type of information of the project we would like to receive. I told he what I write to you now. Instead I got a powerpoint presentation with mostly pictures I already received from you plus pictures of objects that had been taken out presumably from patients’s stomachs (hardly from lungs) – tooth brushes, big spoons, a big spray tin, etc.

 

As you know our common goal with the project was to increase the Emergency Hospital in Kyiv’s capacity to save lives of patients affected by the war due to shooting or explosions.  This is also what we have conveyed to TRF. I understand that the equipment also is used for treatment of “ordinary” patients with any type of treatment need where a bronchoscope is useful.

Elena also gave me a list of all other projects where your club is engaged. I am really impressed! I also understand that you have a limited time/capacity to manage all these projects, including ours.

However, Elenas report gave no information of the hospital’s acute treatments of war stricken or similar patients before or after receiving this new equipment. Therefore I am asking you to find information of this last part. You will definitely need it yourself when the coming TRF-report is due.

I sent an email to you and Mykola on April 26th asking for detailed information of our project. So far I have not received an answer.

Dear Mats,

I am sorry that we are so slow in reaction to your requests. But, it is really tough to me personally, and others involved in our project, to do things quicker.

 

Apart from our project, I am involved personally in:

1) Coordination of another two very big Rotary programs: - production and installation of temporary modular houses for those who lost their homes ( we have found funds, organized production and installation during two years of 134 such homes with $12500 USD cost of each such unit); - similar recently started program with temporary modular medical centers for different locations in Ukraine (for 3 such units of $25000 USD each we have an agreement with Rotary Sweden via TRF Disaster grants scheme). These programs require every day activities plus travelling by car to beneficiary locations in Kyiv region and others.

 

2)  Realization of dozens of different projects each month with Rotary clubs and districts of Great Britain and Ireland, Germany, Austria, Denmark, USA, Japan, other countries (related to electrical generators; bunkers, friendship letters and boxes for schools, different humanitarian aids, etc.)

 

3) I am personally leading the Rotary Leadership Institute trainings in Ukraine; Involved as a trainer at PETS, DTTS, District Training Assembly,, seminars for new members and new Rotary clubs.

 

4) I am facilitating District Strategic Committee and participate in the current Crisis Coordination Committee; District Board; District Conference Organizing Committee; At our Zone level I am a member of the team of Rotary Foundation Coordinator as an Assistant. These all requires several hours of on-line meetings every day...

 

5) My pension does not cover all my costs, therefore I need to perform some business projects to earn money.

 

6) My son is in the Army in status of 'missing' since December 2022, and I undertake with family efforts to find his routs.

 

7) Regularly we have air-raid alarms at nights, and our sleep is not 'normal' for more than two years...

Apologies, that I mentioned all the above... This was just to explain you my own situation. And, therefore, I was happy that our President Iryna and other club mates volunteered to help in communication with hospital within our 'bronhoscop/insulfator project'. They did it as they understood their task. I have translated to them the essence of your notes and information requests, and hoped they will manage further accordingly. But, unfortunately, everybody has own situation: Iryna's husband died in February; Olga had to travel to her daughter and grandson abroad in recent months; Natalia is permanently supplying her son in the Army with necessary things; Mykola has a huge load at his work, …

 

This all I write just to explain that it is not our normal reaction to such request as yours, but we all here are overloaded, and would love to do more things, but often are unable... We all are very much tired, exhausted and frustrated by all this what happens with us during these two years. We hope for your understanding and thank you for your support!

 

Now back to your question: we still need to find out the info we need (from both sides) to report properly and close the Global Grant. I have forwarded to Doctor in the Hospital directly your questions, and hope he will comment to me soon. In any case I plan next week to visit personally the hospital and try to identify necessary information and then forward it to you.

Thank you for your answer.

It was gripping to read about your and other club members private difficulties and misfortunes and I am sad to hear about your missing son.

You do a tremendous work that of course takes its toll on your personal well being. It is inhuman to have such a work load for a long period of time. We must hope that this insanity Ukraine is exposed to will end soon.

 

I will read out your answer to my club members and I am sure there will be an unison understanding why you without delay have difficulties in giving detailed answers to our questions regarding our project.
